Illumination Lawn at Lincoln Center

My new favorite spot in New York.  Part of Lincoln Center’s multiyear renovation, the Illumination Lawn opened in May 2010 and has become an instant hit, albeit with some initial growing pains.  The unique parabolic shape and raised surface is designed not only to provide a calm patch of green amidst the Upper West Side but also to serve as the roof for a restaurant slated to open next year.

The lawn’s slope results in spectacular views of the Hudson River and Time Warner Center as well as Lincoln Center itself.  That same slope, especially when enjoyed under the lights at night, gives visitors a sense of a dual identity, one that is at once urban and pastoral.  It’s a design that not only works but yields a result greater than the sum of its parts.  Check out this slide show and let me know what you think.
